Frequently ASked Questions
Machines
what is a cnc?
CNC stands for computer numeric controlled. This is a means of automatically guiding a machine by a computer reading numeric code supplied by the operator. There are many types of machines controlled in this way. At AKL we specialize in 3 axis CNC routing.
A router cutter could be basically described as a drill bit, but instead of just cutting downwards it can also cut side ways. 3 axis refers to the amount of directions that the machines can move. The 3 axis are the X,Y and Z axis. The x axis moves forwards and backwards, the y axis moves left to right and the z axis moves up and down
WHAT IS 2D MACHINING?
2D machining is where the cutter is lowered on the z axis to specific depths and then simultaneously moved on the x and y axis to cut shapes from the material.
WHAT IS 3D MACHINING?
3D machining is where the cutter is moved simultaneously on all of the X,Y and Z axis allowing you to cut a 3D form.
WHAT IS 3 AXIS MACHINING?
3 axis machining implies that the workpiece remains in the same position while the cutting tool operates along the XYZ plane to trim away material.
WHAT IS 5 AXIS MACHINING?
5-axis machining refers to a machines ability to move a tool or a part in five different axes simultaneously. Basic machining operates on three primary axes, X,Y and Z; however, a 5-axis CNC machining tool can rotate two additional axes, A and B, which give the cutting tool a multidirectional approach.
CAN WE CUT IN 3D?
Yes. All our CNC machines are capable of cutting 3D and one machine has an indexing 4th axis.
CAN WE CUT BOTH SIDES OF THE MATERIAL?
Yes. This is standard practice but please make this apparent on your files or notes.
HOW LARGE/SMALL CAN WE CUT?
Our CNC machines have different bed sizes and clearance planes, our maximum dimensions are as follows:
Max X axis =2000mm
Max Y axis=3050mm
Max Z axis=1220mm
HOW DEEP/SHALLOW CAN WE CUT?
We can cut to any specified depth, within the limitations stated above however this can change depending on the shape of your part. If you are planning to cut close to the limits of our machine please contact us to discuss this.
HOW MANY DIFFERENT TOOLS CAN WE USE?
All of our machines have automatic tool-changers with up 16 tool positions.
CAN I SUPPLY MY OWN CUTTERS?
Yes, but again please make this known in the submission process and contact us to check compatibility.
