Bespoke Alcove
Shelving

Made-to-measure alcove shelving and cupboards built to fit your exact space. Painted MDF, solid oak or oak veneer — every unit made and installed by our own team.

Bespoke Alcove Shelving

Bespoke alcove shelving and chimney-breast units

Fitted alcove shelving and cabinets built to the exact dimensions of the recesses either side of your chimney breast — floating shelves, full-height units and combinations of cupboards and shelving. Hand-built and installed across London and the Home Counties.

Because every alcove is slightly different, we template each one so shelves sit level and units fit flush to the wall. Finished in paint or timber to match your room, with optional lighting.

Questions about
alcove
shelving

Not covered here? Call us on 01494 261 564 — we'll answer straight away.

What is the best material for alcove shelving?
It depends on the look and budget. Painted MDF is the most popular choice — it gives a built-in, furniture-like appearance and can be any colour. Solid oak or oak veneer shelving gives warmth and natural character. Plywood with a painted or veneered face is extremely strong and slightly lighter. We'll advise on the right material for your specific alcove and brief.
Can you add cupboards below the shelving?
Yes — the most common configuration combines open shelving above a knee height with cupboards below. This gives display space at eye level and concealed storage for less attractive items below. We can include soft-close hinges, internal lighting and bespoke internal fittings as required.
Do you work around chimney breasts and uneven walls?
Always. London period properties almost never have perfectly plumb or square walls. We take a full measured survey of the alcove — checking plumb, level and square — and scribe the joinery to the existing walls so the finished unit appears perfectly fitted.
How long does alcove shelving take?
Straightforward alcove shelving typically takes 3–5 weeks from survey to installation. More complex units with cupboards, integrated lighting and cornicing may take 5–7 weeks. We'll confirm the exact programme when we quote.
Can alcove shelving be painted to match my existing woodwork?
Yes. We can supply alcove shelving painted in any Farrow & Ball, Little Greene or RAL colour, sprayed in our workshop for a flawless finish. Alternatively we can supply it primed and ready for your painter to finish on site alongside other woodwork in the room.

The recesses either side of a chimney breast are the most useful space in most homes — when they're built properly.
